How Much Is Your Dinner Worth? by Catie and Aarushi

November 1, 2020

It's that time of year again: the late autumn and early winter holiday extravaganza time when some of us put on ten pounds as we start with Halloween candy, proceed through Thanksgiving turkey, and round it out with New Year's Eve's cake. It's also the time to do donate food to local food banks including the Oregon Food Bank. These organizations give food to people who can't afford it. You could give food, or you can start your own food drive. There are many ways to tackle world hunger, but the change starts with you.

Take a moment and imagine tackling global hunger. When you're eating a cheeseburger all you probably think is Yum! Do we stop and think about the people who can't get that food? Global hunger now afflicts nearly a billion people worldwide. In the developing world, more than 1.4 billion people currently live below the international poverty line, earning less than $1.25 per day. Lack of food can stunt growth, slow thinking, sap energy, and contribute to mental retardation. Severe acute malnutrition, however, is the more immediate killer: it threatens the lives of 19 million children. Every year at least 3.5 million of them die from malnutrition-related causes.

You might be be thinking, I can't do anything that will impact world hunger. There is, though. The Oregon Food Bank is just a click away.

  1. Hello my name is Betsy, and I'm an eighth grader at Punahou school. You guys are great writers, and we do have this problem in Hawaii too. You helped to make me more aware of this issue, so thank you. Maybe you can write a little bit from the malnourished children's perspective. Do you yourselves take action to try and solve this problem? Great job, very creative.

  2. Hello my name is Lauren, and I'm also an eighth grader at Punahou school. You guys give a lot of good facts. I didn't know that 19 million children's lives were in danger of dying because a lack of food. I didn't know also that there were so many side effects of not enough food. Thank you for sharing this. I enjoyed reading it.
